Not the secrets, but something else and new entirely

Good afternoon ladies and gents.

Yesterday I discovered that I was invited to vic pic, a victorian picnic with a cast from Dickens Fair, called Other Books.

This means i needed a victorian summery day dress. Stat.

Enter this bad boy.

Oh yeah. It's a monster of victorian insanity. I found the fabric at the close out bin at Joanns, three yards of this intense taffeta silk. It has a white base with, and those are not the exaggeration of colors, lavender and bright blue plaid.

It is pretty epic. Since I only had three yards of the cheapy taffeta, I decided to make a split skirt. [something like this.]

If I can get away with making three tiers since the fabric is very wide then I will attempt to do that. The idea is not settled just yet, but I will work with something.

everywhere that there is white is just a plain white cotton. Include lots of lavender ribbon and I have myself a victorian daydress that looks like easter and little girls vomited on it.

I'm so excited.

  1. That is...intense! I can't wait to see a picture of the fabric. "Easter and little girls vomited on it" I love it!

    Personally, I really don't like the split skirt - it looks awkward. Do you have a historical reference for it? I would do a plaid overbodice, white underbodice, and plaid bands around the bottom of the white tiers. Or an all white bodice, with lots of plaid piping and trim and the plaid bands around the tiers. But feel free to ignore me ;-> :-P

  2. I do actually have a few of them, i know that truly victorian has a pattern specifically for a double skirt like that. See the reason I am doing it in the way I am is because I don't have enough of that plaid fabric to go around, otherwise i would.

  3. I'm not sure I follow. Is your dress going to look just like the design sketch? I understand why you are doing it, I would just do it differently
    ;->

    Anyway, you do lovely work: I'm sure it will look great!

  4. Yes, im hoping to keep my dress looking the same as the sketch, or possibly switching the two. I really don't have many options with the plaid as it is only 3 yards of 58" wide fabric.

    The only thing that might alter from the sketch is that the plaid may be the under skirt, and the white may be the top skirt, but I am not there yet, So I am unsure.
